Halloween Round up

On October 31st, from noon to 3pm, children can dress up in their costume and visit any Toys”R”Us store to participate in a Halloween celebration. Children ages three and up who attend Geoffrey’s Trick “R” Treat Parade will receive a free reusable bag, which they can fill up with goodies and giveaways (while supplies last)! Cupcake Witches

Look at these super cute witches.

Make your choice of cupcake flavor and ice in a green blue frosting. Then top with a sugar cone for the hat. Use licorice for the hair, M & Ms for the eyes, sprinkles for the eyebrows and mouth, and candy corn for the nose. They would be a HUGE hit!

Thrift Craft Tuesday

Halloween or Fall Festival Buckets


What you will need:
· Plastic buckets (the real deal is to buy these at the end of summer at 75%off)
· Halloween or Fall fabrics in different colors –only a small amount is needed
· Modge Podge glue or Elmer’s glue very watered down
· Fall or Halloween stickers
· Letter stickers
· Different color ribbons

1) Cut 2 -1 ½” strips of fabric. With Modge Podge glue or Elmer’s glue that has been watered down, paint the glue on the top and bottom of bucket, place strips of fabric on top and then paint glue over top of again. You can also use tissue paper instead of fabric. Let dry.

2) While glue is drying, cut remaining fabric and ribbons into strips of different widths but at least 6” long. Once bucket is dried, tie the ribbons and fabric to the handle.

3) Now is the really fun part for kids. Let them decorate the bucket with the stickers and you can even put their name on it. My kids names are on the otherside of the bucket.

4) This idea can also be used for party favors or party activity at birthday parties, as a birthday party gift filled with all the stuff to make the bucket or as a gift bag for a celebration.

Little Mummies

These are so cute. Thanks Gabe!

These Little Mummies are so simple, inexpensive and would make a huge hit at a Halloween party.

Ingredients
Crescent Rolls
Hot Dogs
Mustard
Ketchup
Directions

Roll out the crescent rolls on a floured board or counter. Cut them into long strips. Wrap the strips around each hot dog to look like a mummy. Bake in a 350 degree oven until they are golden brown 10-15 minutes. When they come out, use mustard to make two eyes.

For the dipping sauce: Pour ketchup into a small serving dish. Then, make circles in the ketchup with mustard. Take a toothpick, and draw concentric lines from the center to the outside, making it look like a spider web.

Using a Reusable Shopping Bag

Going green gets more and more popular these days. I love using my reuseable bags. I just heard that Kroger now is giving a bag credit like Target (.10 cents a bag) already does. It is .03 cents per bag I hear.

Now CVS is getting in the bag credit game.

Every 4 visits you use a reusable bag, you can earn ECB’s. Here are the details:
Purchase the Green Bag Tag (pictured above) at CVS for $.99.
Scan it each time you visit CVS and bring a reusable bag (you still need your CVS card for other discounts).
Earn $1 ECB for each 4 scans (4 separate visits – can only scan it once per day).

Trick-or-Treat Sweets

I like to make some fun Halloween treats for my kids. These are fun and great if you do a Halloween party.

"Cobweb" Crisps

Prep: 10 minutes plus cooling
Cook: 10 minutes
Makes: 3 dozen bars

Ingredients:
• 4 tablespoons butter
• 1 bag (10 1/2 ounces) miniature marshmallows
• 8 cups square rice or corn cereal
• 1 cup Halloween baking pieces with semisweet chocolate chips

Directions:
1. Line 13" by 9" metal baking pan with foil; grease foil.
2. In 4-quart saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows, and cook until melted, stirring. Remove from heat; stir in cereal, then 1/2 cup baking pieces.
3. Immediately transfer mixture to prepared pan. With greased spatula, press mixture in pan; sprinkle with remaining baking pieces. Cool.
4. Lift mixture with foil from pan and place on cutting board; peel foil from sides. Cut into 36 pieces.


Pear "Ghosts" and Apple "Jack-o'-Lanterns"

You'll need "ghostly" shaped pears, such as Bosc, and squat round apples, such as Granny Smith, ice-cream-bar sticks, candy coating such as Candy Melts* in assorted colors and candy corn. (*Candy Melts are available in craft stores or from Wilton Enterprises; to order, call 800-794-5866 or go to wilton.com.)

To melt candy coating, combine 2 cups disks with 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening in microwave-safe bowl; heat in microwave on Medium 1 minute. Stir, then heat on Medium in 15-second increments until candy is melted and smooth. Insert stick into top of fruit. Dip pear in white candy and apple in orange candy, tilting bowl to coat fruit completely. (If coating hardens, reheat in microwave on Medium 10 seconds.) Place fruit on waxed paper; let set.

To decorate, use choice of melted coating in small self-sealing plastic bag with corner snipped for a small opening for piping. Attach candy decorations with a dab of melted coating. Chill 5 minutes to set.


Brownie "Goblins"

Prepare brownie mix as label directs but bake in 15 1/2" by 10 1/2" jelly-roll pan only 15 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool brownie in pan. When cool, cut out brownie using ghost-shaped cookie cutter.

To decorate, melt white candy coating as above; use to pipe outline on top of ghost cutout. When outline is set, fill in interior with additional melted candy. When set, pipe on brown eyes and mouth. Let set.

Thrifty Craft Tuesday

Leaf Collection Leaves

What you will need:
· Construction Paper-pick a fall color
·White sheet of paper
·Collection of leaves –dried if possible
· Glue (will need paint brush) or glue stick

1) Take your child on a walk outside. Collect lots of different color leaves. It really doesn’t matter what kind of leaves just different colors.

2) Using your best art skills (which mine for drawing leaves is obviously not great!) Draw out a large leaf on the construction paper and cut out. Glue to white paper.

3) If the leaves you collected are not dry try this suggestion.
Place leaves between 2 paper towels, one on top, one on the bottom and place in microwave. Set microwave for one minute but every 10 seconds open the microwave and check leaves. This process will dry them out but it also cooks them. If leaves are TOO DRY they will catch fire so DO NOT OVER dry! Check each time to see if leaves are able to be crushed up yet.

4) Once leaves are dry have children crush them into large bowl.

5) With glue stick or glue, spread all over construction leaf.

6) Now have children put piles of crushed leaves on to glue and press down. Once all leaves are used shake paper back over bowl to get rid of excess leaves.

7) Enjoy your leaf collection! To make it last even longer-place it between 2 sheets of wax paper and take a low set iron to it. This will fuse the wax paper to your collection making it last for years to come. (PhotoD)
