Christmas Jar

I found this idea on Mom Advice and what was funny is I thought of doing the same thing 2 weeks ago. So I wanted to share the idea.

Creating memories for Christmas can be an amazing experience for your child. Buying presents is easy, but creating a memory that will last a lifetime is more difficult and more rewarding for parents.

This year we are creating a Christmas Jar and we are filling it with twenty-four activities to do with them starting on December 1st. Each day we will draw an activity and complete it. Not only will the activity be fun, but it will also be a great way to mark down the days until Christmas.

Find any Mason jar and decorate it any way that you would like. On pieces of wrapping paper, create an activity to do each day and tuck it inside of the jar. On December 1st, begin the ritual of drawing from the jar and completing the activity for the day.

1.Get a Christmas movie to watch together. (Try Redbox for only $1/ea!)

2.Before bed read the true story of Christmas from Luke 2:1-20.

3.Make some hot chocolate and sit under the Christmas tree to read a Christmas book.

4.Make cookies to take to a friend or teacher.

5.Go to the library to checkout Christmas books.

6.Play a game while eating popcorn and listening to Christmas tunes.

7.Print out a holiday coloring page and color it.

8.Pick out a few toys to donate, and take them to a local shelter.

9.Make a Christmas ornament for each child to hang on the tree. (Cut out Christmas shapes like trees, snowflakes or stars and have them decorate them with stickers, glitter and markers. Then punch a hole, slide ribbon through it and put on the tree!)

10.Make pancakes for breakfast and decorate them like a Christmas tree.

11.Go see the Christmas lights! Have the kids put on their pj’s, pack a snack and listen to Christmas music while driving around.

12.Put on some peppy Christmas music and dance around together. (We love to do this, the kids get so excited…and wound up!)

13.Give the kids a bath while Christmas carols blare into the bathroom. See who can sing the loudest.

14.Make cookies for you to eat!

15.Make a homemade gift of any kind for a family member.

16.Sing your favorite Christmas carols that your kids know the words to. (A few good ones are Silent Night, Away In a Manger or Jingle Bells)

17.Make grandparents handmade artwork for a present. (Get their handprints framed and date it!)

18.Start a Jesse tree. (A tree that captures the geneaology of Christ.)

19.Go Christmas Caroling around your neighborhood or to an home for the elderly.

20.Hand make a few Christmas cards and put the kids picture inside.

21.Act out the birth of Christ. (Dress up and use fun props like stuffed animals.)

22.Tell your child exactly how much and why you love them so much!

23.Make Christmas cards for teachers or those that serve you in the community( Mail delivery person, Newspaper delivery person, Sunday school teacher, etc.)

24.Make a stocking stuffer for a family member.

I hope that these ideas are a good start towards your Christmas Jar. Remember that these are the types of things that your child will remember and nothing in your jar necessarily has to cost you any money at all. Your child will long remember these times together and you will have created a memorable Christmas for the entire family. Happy Holidays!

Black Friday Info

Make a list. Who are you buying for?

Get the paper or go online to get the ads. There are websites that list the ads for the stores. Like Black Friday 2009 and Black Friday Ads. You can go to these websites and get email alerts too. Write down what stores have what and at what price so you are prepared. Keep the ads with you so in case store A is sold out you know what other stores have the same product. Also keeping the ad with you helps if you come across a deal that you did not notice in the ad you can compare the price to the other sales to make sure it’s a good deal.

Use Coupons. You can find store coupons and coupons for a lot of things this year. Go to Awesome Freebies and Deals. You search online for coupons for the items you are looking for. When I am looking for something, I google the item or store and coupon code, so an example would be The Children’s Place coupon code. You would be surprised at the coupons you can find on toys and electronics. Also look into products with rebates too.

Make a plan. Figure out what time stores open and make a game plan and order you plan to go to them in.

Figure out what stores price match. No sense in going to store A for one thing when store B has more things on your list. Wal-mart, Target, Best Buy are some stores that price match.

Have a partner. Divide and conquer. Maybe one of you goes to electronics while the other toys. Or 1 person goes to one store and another the other store with each others lists. Grab your cell phone or walkie talkie too so you can call each other if you have a question or problem.

Leave the kids at home. Waking kids at the crack of dawn and then trying to shop just don’t mix. Talk about stressed out. Black Friday is insane enough let alone dragging kids along. You really will not get much down with them in tow.

Wear layers and pack a snack and water. It is cold hanging out in the in line outside the store waiting for it to open then once you get inside it is hot and the adrenaline is flowing. You also want to stay hydrated and a snack helps keep the energy level up.

If Black Friday scares you….Do your shopping online in your jammies that morning or the days leading up to it. Retailers this year have gone crazy with pre-Black Fridays deals. Also retailers hold back deals for the Monday after Thanksgiving otherwise known as Cyber Monday. Websites like BlackFriday.info help you find deals in the comfort of your home.

Thrifity Craft Tuesday

Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl-ing

While some of the bigger kids are playing their own turkey bowl football game in the backyard, we’re going to be “bowling for turkeys” down the hallway. We’ve transformed our old plastic bowling set into a fun turkey take down!
Supplies for Turkey Bowling:

plastic bowling set, or plastic soda bottles
small football
craft feathers
tape
craft foam shape stickers
scissors, black pen

For the turkey feathers, pull out a piece of clear tape and lay it sticky side up on the table. Add 3-5 feathers to the tape, then tape it to the back of the bowling pin. Add one more piece of tape to secure it.

For the turkey’s face, find small circle foam stickers for the eyes, a triangle for the beak, and cut a small heart in half for the beak waddle. We also added a little black marker dot to each eye.

Now line them up and bowl them down. We even used a football to make it an official “Thanksgiving turkey bowl”!

Target's NEW policy on Price matching.

>> Sunday, November 22, 2009

I must say I’m pretty disappointed and confused with Target at this point. Instead of taking the time to present a well thought out price matching policy, they seem to be in a reactionary mode and updating it on a whim.

After just presenting a new version of their Low Price Promise last weekend, Target has already updated it again. Going forward Target coupons will be deducted before price matching. If the price in the competitor ad is still lower, then that price will be applied and any manufacturer’s coupons will be deducted. So basically Target store coupons can no longer be deducted after the price match is made.

It seems to me that if Target really wants to provide excellent customer service and give customers an incentive to shop their store over a competitor, they would offer us a true low price guarantee, including honoring store coupons.

Target: New Printable Coupon Policy/System

>> Saturday, November 21, 2009

As I mentioned earlier this week, Target has implemented a new system for their printable coupons. You can view this new system and print your coupons here.

From what I understand, here is how the change will impact us:

* We will no longer be able to use "coupon generators" on forum websites

* We will be limited to printing 2 coupons per computer

* We will not know the expiration date or if the coupon is a manufacturer's or Target coupon until we print the coupon

* To my knowledge, we will no longer be able to print coupons from the Target kiosks (has anyone tried recently?)

Target has published a new FAQ page in response to their new printing system here.

I will do my best each week to alert you to which coupons are manufacturer's vs. store and their expiration date. I know that this will come as a disappointment to many (myself included), but I can see Target's point of view on this as well. I'm choosing to be thankful that Target is still offering printable coupons, and I'm hopeful that we'll still be able to score great deals there each week.

This is an easy crock pot meal. It's full of healthy ingredients. It is served over jasmine rice. My kids give it a 2 thumbs up too. Bonus!!!

Bad News about Target Coupons

>> Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Target has changed its system for printing coupons. You are now limited to 2 prints per computer and you have to print them directly from the Target site. Boo-hoo so no more hot coupon world coupons...
But the good news is any coupons found here can be printed multiple times. I'd hurry and print off lots just in case they take those down.

Thrifity Craft Tuesday

This is a fun way to decorate the Thanksgiving table, as well as getting everyone sitting at the table involved in the spirit of Thankfulness.

To make the centerpiece, find a brown colored pot. It could be terra-cotta, ceramic, really any kind of flower-type pot. Then fill it with some type of filling. I used Spanish Moss. You could use a flower block and cover it with leaves or moss. Just fill it with something that will allow the feathers to hold up.

Now, using pipe cleaner, make the turkey’s neck and head. Brown pipe cleaner would be best here. I used 3 pieces to make it a thicker head. Curl one end of the pipe cleaner into an oval circle, making the turkey’s head. Then cut a small piece of red paper or red pipe cleaner, and attach it to the oval circle, making the turkey’s wattle (which I just learned are only on male turkeys.) Stick the turkey’s head into the pot as well.

Next, cut out feather shapes from colored paper. Glue or tape popsicle sticks to one end. Stick the paper feathers into the pot.

Now your center piece is ready for the guests. Provide pencils or crayons and have each guest take one feather and write 3 thing they are thankful for on their feather. This is best done while people are arriving. Then once the food is devoured, you can take some time out to have each person read what they wrote on the feather. When the person is done reading, they stick their feather back in the pot. Continue around the table until all the feathers are replaced. It is fun to share what we are all thankful for and it makes for a great centerpiece.
