Frugalissa on the go...
It has been a busy day for me. Full and fun but I loved every minute of it. I did my interview on WBIR then went to be apart of The Knoxville Coupon Fair. It was a lot fun to talk to readers/followers and share tips on saving money.
Here is the handout I did about saving money on children's products and nutrition and recipes.
Here a little bio on me.
Hi, my name is Melissa aka-Frugalissa. I am a wife and mom to 2 kiddos. I am quite savvy at finding deals and saving money. My motto is "Frugal does not mean I have to be cheap". I am into natural living, being green and try to feed my family healthy, wholesome food. I am proof you can still be healthy and frugal too. My grocery budget is about $40 a week. If I can do it anyone can eat healthy and still save money. I love helping people save money, make healthy food for their families and live frugally. Hope you stick around and learn some new things.

1. Take inventory of what you need and make a list – Figure out what size clothes and shoes you need for each child. I write each child’s name on a list and list each article of clothing I am looking for. So I remember and can check it off. If I know I am looking for a 3T white sweater and an Easter dress you bet I will write it down so I don’t get overwhelmed and forget. Also take inventory of what you already have. I have mistakenly bought articles of clothing that my kids already had.
2. Go with a Friend or Family Member-I have a good friend who I have shopped a few sales with and it is so fun to go our separate ways and shop then come back together and show off our finds and figure out together if it is a good deal or not. I also have given her fashion advice as she sometimes wants to buy her son some not so boyish things;) But it is also good to have a second set of eyes out there if you are looking for something in particular. It is all about divide and conquer one person goes to toys while the other goes to strollers or whatever.
3. Bring a Basket-I have this rolling cart that I take with me. But a laundry basket or giant bag would do the trick too. Something to hold all your finds in that allows you to have your arms and hands free.
4. Leave the Kids at Home-Enlist Dad, get a sitter or drop the kids off with a friend who is not shopping. With some of the bigger sales crowds are an issue and you really will not get much shopping done with them in tow. Plus I shop for my kids I don’t want them to see all the toys I buy them. Because oftentimes it is for Christmas and Birthdays. You will be more focused and score some deals if they are not with you.
5. Shop Early– For the big sales I always shop presale. You get the best selection and lines and crowds are not as bad. So I always either consign or volunteer at the sale to shop early. Even if you don’t consign at a sale you can almost always volunteer to work the sale. Side note-Enlist your hubby, friend, mother in law etc. to work for you so you can shop early. I have a friend that her and her hubby volunteer together and then she gets to shop even earlier with those combined hours.
6.Figure out a good price-Do your homework to know what a good price on an item is. I check out eBay or craigslist for that. This helps figure out what the average price is and then you can try and figure out if the consignment price is good or not.
7. Half Price Day– I always love going to half price day. It is the last day of the sale and you often times can still find decent stuff. The first day you shop is when you buy what you need and half-price day is when you get the items you want or like. It is also a good time to buy ahead for the next year if they are a decent price.

The Knoxville Coupon Fair—TOMORROW 2/27
Faith UMC hosts The Knoxville Coupon Fair on Saturday, February 27th from 9am-12n. Attendance is free and child care is provided on a first come, first serve basis. Local couponers and other money saving resources will host booths, answer all of your couponing questions, and provide information and education.
Browse booths, trade your extra coupons and freebies, hone your couponing skills, and learn all you need to know about saving your family $$$!
Where—Faith United Methodist Church, 1120 Dry Gap Pike, Knoxville, TN 37918 Go to http://www.faithseekers.org/ for directions and more information on the church
When—Saturday, February 27th from 9am-12n
Booths to watch for—Gabrielle of Couponing in Critical Times, Katie of Coupon Katie, Jennifer of Coupon Mommie, Melissa of Frugalissa Finds, Hannah of Frugally Farming Family, Jennifer of Living on More for Less, Isha of Knoxville Mamabelle, Kathryn of Knoxville on a Dime, Angel Food Ministries, East TN Rewards, Knoxmoms, Kroger of Fountain City, One Call Club for Seniors, Regions Bank, Silver Lining Children’s Consignment, Three Rivers Market, CheapKnox.com and more!
For more information, contact Gabrielle at Couponingincriticaltimes@gmail.com or phone the church at 865-688-1000.
Will there be door prizes?
We'll have a number of door prizes to draw throughout the day. You must be present to win. If you are a business that would like to donate a door prize for the coupon fair, please feel free to e-mail me. In addition the first 100 people present at the fair will receive a complimentary cloth shopping bag thanks to Andy Anderson of State Farm, a coupon from Pilot Corporation for their yummy hot beverages, and a free trial at Curves! The first 200 will receive a ready bag from the Knoxville-Knox County Emergency Management Agency.
Will there be coupons given away?
We'll also have a couple of "swap" tables. One will be for "freebies" those items that you might pick up for free after a coupon or receive as a sample from a company. For every item you bring in, you'll be able to swap it for another item on the table. Any items left after the end of the day will go to the food and toiletry pantry at Faith UMC.
There will be another table where people can swap coupons--leave what you do not want and pick up what you can use.
Some of the resource booths will have coupons at their tables for attendees to pick up as they browse.
Do you have to make reservations for the childcare or is it just drop in?
Because the event will be set up like a fair where attendees can drop in and out at their convenience, visit the booths that are applicable to what they want to learn, and can speak directly to experts, we thought that reservations might be too difficult to set for folks. We have volunteers who will be at the church to help with childcare. Due to limited space, childcare is first come, first serve. If the childcare rooms are filled to capacity, parents are also welcome to bring their children to the fair in the sanctuary.
Do I have to leave my child in the childcare rooms?
Absolutely not. Since the sanctuary will be set up with booths, smaller strollers will also work. The reason we included the childcare information on the poster is that so many people from the community had requested it when we had our last coupon workshop at the church. We want people to know that they are happy to do whatever they feel comfortable with regarding child care.
Do I have to make reservations to attend the coupon fair?
No reservations are needed. Admission is free of charge and is provided as a community service by Faith UMC and the many generous coupon experts and resource booths that have volunteered their time.
Will I have to be present for the entire three hours?
No. The Knoxville Coupon Fair is unlike any other coupon workshops. There will be introductions of the coupon experts and resource booth representatives, but there will not be a formal presentation or speech. Instead you’ll find various topics addressed at different booths that address almost every aspect of couponing and saving money for your family. For example, Coupon Katie will have a handout and will be the expert addressing couponing and shopping at Target. Coupon Mommie will have handouts and information on shopping the drugstores (Walgreens and CVS). Because of the way the fair is set up, you’ll be able to come and go as your schedule allows. You’ll be able to focus on the tables that are of the most interest to you and meet your needs. I do hope you’ll check out each one, as all of them will contain great information!
What topics will be addressed at the booths?
How to organize your coupons, Learning the Coupon Lingo, Couponing on the Computer, Shopping at Walgreens and CVS, Couponing at Target, Saving Money on Organics, Meal Planning, Growing and Preserving Your Own Foods, Healthy Lunch Options, Saving Money on Items for Babies and Children, Starting a Coupon Ministry, Giving through Couponing, Budgeting, Saving Money at Restaurants, Savings for Seniors, and more!

Staying in Bed...
>> Tuesday, February 23, 2010
For the last 2+ years on and off. I have been woken up to him standing over me in the middle of the night or the last year he has been waking up at 6am....I am not a happy person when being woken up and the morning does not start for me till 7am anyway. So we would always tell him to go back to bed and so on. He is of the age where he should stay in his bed.
Well, I looked into ordering this Good Nite Light....But at $34.99 I said, NO!!! I am Frugalissa after all. A bit outrageous. So when I read Mama Manifesto about one of the Mama's having a similar issue. Her son is the same age as mine. I totally had a friend buy me the same light from IKEA when she in Minnesota and I bought a timer and essentially it is the same thing....You could use any light or lamp to reenact it though. The bulb is like 4 watts or something not very bright at all. VIOLA..the boy stays in his bed!!!!
Why, did I not do this 2 years ago!!!
