4 Ways To Make Sure Your Kids Eat Healthy At School

>> Wednesday, March 31, 2010

What’s on your kid’s school lunch menu this week? Probably not the freshest, healthiest options…and if your kid is like most every other kid, pizza or chicken nuggets trumps any other food choice.

If most school cafeteria meals offer unhealthy choices, the real question is: is it possible for kids to eat healthy in schools?

I think so!!!

1. Check the lunch menu at the beginning of the week with your children
Instead of letting the kids choose their meals that day in the cafeteria (they WILL choose the pizza), review the weekly menu ahead of time and ask your kids what they would choose. Use the review time as a chance to educate your kids and explain why the healthier options will help them be strong and ready for school!

2. Educate your kids about vending machines and don’t allow them to buy from them!
Worse than school lunches are probably the vending machines with sodas and snacks laden with high-fructose corn syrup, trans fats, artificial colors and flavors!

3. If the school lunch menu does not look healthy, try packing a lunch!
Leftovers from a healthy dinner the night before, sandwiches with lean meats, fresh veggies, or even an organic PB & J sandwich is fun for kids to eat. Pack fresh fruit as a snack, with another healthy snack, and organic juice or money for milk. Add a special note and the lunch will be even more fun!

4. Cook with the kids at home and teach them about the ingredients!
No matter what you are preparing, see it as a shared activity with the kids. Get them in the kitchen and talk to them about all the fresh ingredients you are using. Seeing where their food comes from will help kids think about what they are eating. Seeing the fresh ingredients come together deliciously is fun for them!

Toys R Us: FREE My Little Pony 3/31

This totally worked. But the one off Kingston Pike is all out. Try East Town or other TRUS in your area. I did have to explain to the cashier that they could use the coupon since it was not a store coupon but a manu coupon.

My Little Pony's are Buy 1 Get 1 Free at Toys R Us today, Wednesday 3/31, only. I'm not sure what the Toys R Us policy is on combining a B1G1 sale with a B1G1 coupon, but there's a B1G1 My Little Pony printable coupon available which could make for possible FREE toys!

Empty Tomb Cookies

A couple years ago, I discovered a recipe for Empty Tomb Cookies. I was intrigued with the idea and decided to try them out last year. What a wonderful opportunity this presented to further teach the truth of Easter. I can't wait to do it again this year.

Begin this recipe on Saturday, the day before Easter.

1 cup whole pecans
1 teaspoon vinegar
3 egg whites
pinch salt
1 cup sugar
zipper baggie wooden spoon or a wooden meat hammer
duct tape or packing tape
Bible

Preheat oven to 300*F.

Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon or hammer to break them into small pieces.

Explain that after Jesus was arrested he was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.

Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 teaspoon of vinegar into the mixing bowl.

Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross he was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.

Add egg whites to the vinegar. Eggs represent life.

Explain that Jesus gave his life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.

Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste. Then put your pinch of salt in the bowl.

Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus's followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27

So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing! Add 1 cup sugar to the bowl.

Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because he loves us. He wants us to know and belong to him. Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16.

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 10 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks form.

Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3.

Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered cookie sheets.

Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus's body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60.

Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape to seal the oven door.

Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27:65-66.

Leave the kitchen. If you've been making these cookies just before bedtime, GO TO BED!

Acknowledge that the kids are probably sad that they've worked hard to make these cookies, and now have to leave them in the oven overnight. Explain that Jesus' followers were in sad when Jesus died and the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20 and 22.

On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Ask the kids to notice the cracked surface. Have them bite into the cookies. The cookies are hollow!

Explain that on the first Easter morning, Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9.

HE HAS RISEN!

Fun, Inexpensive Spring Break Activities

1.Play Tourist in your Town: Go downtown and look at the historical buildings, play in the fountains at World’s Fair Park, visit a local museum or the Oak Ridge Children’s museum, go to the Zoo, go down to Market Square. Just being outside seeing what our own city offers is a lot of fun.

2. Be a Cook for a Day: Spend some time cooking in the kitchen together as a family. Make homemade pizza, bake everyone's favorite cookies, or pick another country or state you would like to visit and cook some of the local food from that place. Once your meal is made why not turn it into a tea party or have friends over for a party?

3. Pajama/Movie Day: Pick a day during the week and stay in your pajamas all day long watching movies. Host a movie marathon where everyone in the family gets to choose their favorite movie to watch. Make some popcorn or set up an ice cream sundae bar. Invite some of your kids friends over and just enjoy relaxing. For even more movie watching fun, set up a tent in the family room and let the kids watch from their sleeping bags.

4. Park and Picnic: Go to your favorite park and do swings and slide, etc and then picnic on a big blanket when you’re finished.

5. Camping Indoors: It may be a little cold still to camp outside so why not camp indoors for some unusual fun? You can make s'mores in the fireplace or over the stove top, sleep in a tent or make a tent of blankets and sleep in sleeping bags, and stay up telling stories by flashlight - all in the comfort of your own home.

6. Wii Olympics: Host a Wii Olympics tournament one day or every day of Spring Break. Each day pick a different "sport" and see who the best in the family is. Invite friends, neighbors and family members to compete. Make homemade medals and have a mock ceremony to honor the champion.

7. Spa Day: Pamper your girls by deep conditioning hair, do facials, having them do manicures and pedicures.

Thank you to the Facebook Fans and readers who submitted ideas.

McDonald's Happy Meals Don't Rot

>> Wednesday, March 24, 2010

photo off treehugger.com

I saw this article on Facebook today called McDonald's Happy Meals Evidently Invincible. Did you know if you ordered a Happy Meal and stuck it in your closet and forgot about it for a year. It would look exactly the same. No rot, mold or decay.

I saw a youtube video on this same subject awhile ago, then last summer at a nutrition talk saw a Happy meal that was months old. I even touched it not knowing it was so old. GROSS!!! I always knew McD's had issues. But after that talk I said NEVER will I or my family eat there again. We have not. Now the kids when you ask them, "Do we eat there?" They say, "NO WAY that place is gross."

Is the School Cafeteria Worse Than a Fast Food Restaurant?

I saw this article on Earthfare.com today. I thought it was awesome and wanted to share it with all of you. Since I am on a mission to start a Food Revolution I thought it was very fitting.

Last week, Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) introduced the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (formerly known as the Child Nutrition Act), which proposes a $4.5 billion increase over the next 10 years for school lunches and other nutrition programs. This is less than half of $1 billion per year suggested by President Obama at the end of February, but it is still a large increase. The legislation aims to make school meals healthier and available to more children who need it.

The real question is: will the legislation work and is it necessary to invest more money in the school lunch program?

Before answering, consider this: Currently, schools only have about $1 per child to spend on buying actual ingredients.

This is not much money, and schools are struggling to produce fresh meals from good ingredients for just a buck. In fact, last December, USA Today found that fast food meat was safer than school lunch meat provided by the USDA! In other words, beef from Jack in the Box is better than a hamburger served in a school cafeteria! Jack in the Box sets higher limits (10x stricter than USDA’s) for amount of certain bacteria allowed in their burgers. Companies like McDonald’s, Burger King and Costco check ground beef for bacteria 5 to 10 times more often than the USDA does.

Want to know something even more shocking? Meat that KFC won’t buy because it’s from old birds, or “spent hens,” that would usually go into compost or pet food is…being put on kid’s lunch trays. There were quality issues with this chicken meat, but it is being fed daily to the 31 million students who participate in the National School Lunch Program.

Oh, and don’t forget that french fries are considered a vegetable according to school lunch guidelines.

Fortunately, after much understandable outrage, the USDA announced reforms to ensure safety and quality of school food. In February, the USDA said that it would tighten requirements on companies supplying ground beef, test beef more often and improve communications within the USDA to identify food safety issues.

If we as a country know that childhood obesity is a public health crisis, why is the taxpayer’s money being used to feed today’s children the lowest quality, over-processed, and unhealthy foods?

What do you think we can do to help?

Thrifty Craft Tuesday-Resurrection Eggs

I can’t take credit for this idea–these are sometimes called Resurrection Eggs.

Preparation
Number (with stickers or a marker) 12 plastic Easter eggs.
Put the following items in the respective eggs:

1: a leaf–real or plastic (if it vaguely resembles a palm branch, all the better)

2: a piece of cloth with a little perfume on it

3: a piece of a tortilla, pita, or bread or white clay shaped to look like flat bread

4: three dimes

5: Grapevine Wreath or Large Thorn

6: a Dice

7: a cross made out of wood, toothpicks, popsicle sticks, or paper

8: a nail

9: a piece of paper that says THE KING OF THE JEWS

10: a little bundle (wrapped in fabric, a baggie, plastic wrap, etc.) of spices–cloves would be nice

11: a stone–rounded would be best

12: leave empty

The Activity
You can have your children take turns opening the eggs (be sure to go in order by the numbers). Here are the explanations for the items in each egg; I’ve made them appropriate for a four-year-old; scale up or down as necessary.

1: When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the people waved branches because that what people used to do when a king walked by.

2: Later, Jesus had a special dinner with his friends. A woman came and poured perfume on his head. This showed that she knew that he was the Christ and she knew that he would die soon.

3: The next day, Jesus had another special meal with his friends. We call this The Last Supper. This is when the sacrament began, because Jesus said that people who followed Him should have bread and wine to help them remember Him.

4: Judas was supposed to be one of Jesus special helpers, but instead he helped other men arrest Jesus. He did this because those men paid him money.

5: After Jesus was arrested, the soldiers were really mean to Him and made fun of Him. One thing that they did was to put a purple robe on Him and made Him wear a crown of thorns.

6: The cast lots where they gambled for His garments

7: Jesus was crucified.

8: When the soldiers put Jesus on the cross, they pounded nails into His hands and feet.

9: Another thing the soldiers did to make fun of Jesus was to put a sign on the cross that said THE KING OF THE Jews.

10: After Jesus died, His friends put his body in a tomb. Later, some of the women who followed Him came to the tomb to put spices on His body. That was something they did back then when someone died.

11: The tomb had a rock that could roll over the opening to seal it.

12: When they got to the tomb, they were amazed to find that the stone had been rolled out of the way and Jesus body was gone! Then an angel came and told them, He is risen; he is not here (Mark 16:66). This egg is empty because Jesus tomb was empty. Jesus tomb was empty because He was resurrected! (You may want to share your testimony of the resurrection at this point.)

Here are the scriptures that go along with each egg if you want them. You could either print them out, cut them up, and place the appropriate one in each egg, or you could read them as you explain what is in each egg.

1: The people waved palm leaves and laid them in the streets when Jesus entered into Jerusalem. (Matthew 21:1-11)

2: And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as Jesus sat, there came a woman having an alabaster jar of perfume; and she broke it, and poured it on his head (Mark 14:3)

3: And as they ate, Jesus took some bread, and blessed it and then broke it, and gave to them, and said, Take and eat this is my body (Mark 14:22)

4: And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests, to arrange to betray him to them. When they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. He began to look for an opportunity betray Jesus (Mark 14:10-11)

5: The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and out it on his head and they put a purple robe on him. (John 19:2)

6: When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, the soldiers divided his clothes among the four of them. They also they took his robe but it was seamless woven in one piece from top to bottom. (John 19:23)

7: It was the third hour when they crucified him. (Mark 15:25)

8: But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, r I will not believe it. (John 20:25)

9: The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS (MARK 15:26)

10: When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, that they might come and anoint him (Mark 16:1)

11: They said among themselves, who shall roll away the stone from the door of the tomb? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away. (Mark 16:3-4)

12: Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. (Mark 16:6)

We’ve done this activity for a few years now and my children always enjoy it.

Wanna Start a Food Revolution!!!!

>> Monday, March 22, 2010

I am a very passionate person. One of my many passions is my kids nutrition, health and wellness. I have learned so much in the last 5 years since becoming a Mom. I am the Mom who reads all labels and does not really let my kids eat crap. I want to know what is in their foods. These are my babies and I am responsible and accountable for their health. Now we have an occasional treat here and there but the majority of the time we error on the side of healthy. I have friends that are amazed my kids eat normal food and not chicken nuggets, hot dogs and fish sticks all the time. My daughter almost 3 has never eaten a hot dog more then once or twice. Never eaten a chicken nugget or fish stick. This is precisely why I am so passionate about their nutrition. People think I am crazy cause they don't eat McD's. We don't eat fast food. When you ask them what hey want the say a sit down restaurants and ask for real food not a chicken nugget. What is a nugget? What part of the chicken does that come off of anyway? Picky eaters don't reside in my house. They eat what is is served and it is food not chemical mush.

So now you know where I stand and the soapbox I stand on....I just watched a new show on ABC called Food Revolution. It is Jamie Oliver , also known as The Naked Chef, no, he doesn't cook naked. Jamie says that every child in America has the right to fresh, nutritious school meals, and that every family deserves real, honest, wholesome food. Too many people are being affected by what they eat. It's time for a national revolution. America needs to stand up for better food.
This show is awesome. I watched the first episode today. Go HERE if you missed it. Then sign Jamie's Petition that will be shared with our President.
I am starting a Revolution. I am tired of my kids friends always being sick and Moms thinking they have to feed their kids mush and toxic crap because that is just what kids eat these days. I want to scream it does not have to be like that. When I was growing up we did not have as much convenience food and crap in our food like we do today. You wonder why kids are so sick these days. What do we put in their little bodies. Please don't tell me it is too expensive because it is not. This is your kids health. If you think it is listen to this quote that I love, "You want to pay for groceries or pay the doctor later."How often are your kids at the doctors office and how many different diseases, conditions or drugs are they on??? It all adds up. Our bodies are God's temple. Are you taking care of your families temples?? I feed my WHOLE family on $40-50 a week. Hardly processed, no high fructose corn syrup or trans fats. You can DO IT!!!
Will you join me???

Quaker Oatmeal at Target-$2.48 for 30 packets

I love when readers give me a heads up on deals. This one comes from Beth in GA.

Okay, this great deal is at Target, but you have to look for it. On the end cap in the grocery section facing the cold cases where they stash their clearance groceries. (Just look!) The 30 Value Pack of Quaker Maple & Brown Sugar Instant Oatmeal (regularly $6.99) is marked down to $3.48. Already a great deal, right? But wait! Print out this $1 off coupon and you'll only pay $2.48 for 30 packs of oatmeal! That's like getting 2 regular boxes FREE!
I stumbled on this at both the Atlantic Station (In Atlanta) and the Athens, Georgia Target. When I asked the grocery manager if this would be at all Targets, she told me any Target that carried these value packs would have them on clearance.
I am heading out to the Target here in Knoxville. I will let you know if I see it. Anyone else find this deal??

Good Deal on Mary Jane Crocs $7.99 Shipped

Any of my real life friends (rlf) know I have a minor Croc obsession when it comes to my kids. My obsession has now turned my kids into Croc-addicts too. They love them. My son nearly wore them daily for 2 years straight. Through rainy days even and he even tried to wear them in the snow once. The streak was broken this Fall when his teacher advised him to not wear them since the school playground is a bit mulchy. Funny how I advised him of that and he did not want to listen to ME. HMM!!!

Anyway, the point of this post is to let you know that the above Mary Jane Crocs are $7.99. Even cooler is there free shipping. For other Crocs on sale go HERE.

Have a Date Night on a Dime

Photo from MSN.com
I saw this article on Yahoo today. Some of the tips I think sound fun.

In your attempt at budgeting money, you have probably cut back on your daily excursion to Starbucks, eaten out less, etc.. However, your new fiscally responsible lifestyle doesn't have to interfere with your love life. Avoid more tired dinner dates followed by movies. Below are our top 8 picks for budget-friendly dates:

1. Bring the theater to you- If you have access to a patio or outdoor space, all you need is a projector and you have yourself a foolproof date. Pop your own popcorn, lay out a blanket, and just wait for the sun to set. Although you may have to wait until the weather warms up a bit for this one, what could be more romantic than viewing your favorite film together out in the fresh air?

2. Go to a game- Reminisce about your glory days by taking your significant other to your local high school football game. Bring a thermos of hot chocolate and a blanket to cozy up with in case it's cold out. Tell her about that time you scored the winning touch-down, and feel free to avoid any embarrassing adolescent tales.

3. Fondue for two- Don't be fooled by the fancy name-- making fondue is a cinch. Start the evening snacking on baguettes dipped in melted cheese and end it by dipping fresh fruit into melted chocolate. You are sure to impress your date with your creativity. Here is a great recipe to get you started.

4. Have your own wine tasting- Host a get-together requiring each guest to bring a bottle of wine and their favorite cheese. This is a great way to introduce your date to all of your friends, while sampling a variety of wine and cheese flavors. Plus, the evening doesn't have to cost more than your own contribution.

5. Host trivia night- Board games are no longer synonymous with being bored. There are plenty of games to choose from that bear no resemblance to your childhood favorites like Candy Land and Shoots and Ladders. Invite some friends over for an intellectual game night with favorites like Trivial Pursuit or Apples to Apples. This is the perfect way spend a casual night in, while simultaneously impressing your date with all your extensive random knowledge. Plus, there's no cost involved-- all you have to do is raid the old boxes in your attic to find a game you most likely already own.

6. Go to an outdoor concert- If the weather is nice out, take advantage of the many free outdoor concerts in your city. Pack up a blanket and some snacks to enjoy while rocking to the beat. Visit MetroMix.com to view the upcoming concerts in your area.

7. Theme nights- Put a twist on your classic dinner and a movie night by basing your food and film choices on a particular country. Roll your own sushi and watch a Japanese flick over some sake, or venture into France over a bottle of French wine, a wedge of brie, and an Audrey Tatou film. Although this borders on slightly cheesy, it will definitely spice up the cliché dinner-and-a-movie date while allowing you to save money at home.

8. Stargazing- Looking to spend some time together free of distractions and disturbances? Surprise your date with a night of stargazing. Perhaps the notion of lying under the stars brings weepy Nicholas Sparks movies to mind, but you can't deny its romantic appeal. Simply find a special place with a good view of the sky, and surprise your significant other on the next clear night.
