Cedar Springs Christian Stores Specials and Important info

>> Friday, November 26, 2010

I received an email today from Frugally Farming Family encouraging people to shop Cedar Springs Christian Stores this Christmas season. They among other local businesses here in the Knoxville area have been hit hard due to the economy. Due to Amazon, Kindle, and Itunes and the deep discounts other "big" companies provide it is hard for local businesses to stay afloat.

Someone asked why they should spend more money at Cedar Springs when they could get the items cheaper at Amazon. A son of one of the original owners answered this question in one word “pornography.” After looking into it, one of their customers found that Amazon not only sells soft pornography, but they also sell hard pornography. I have actually seen this first hand as there was a link floating around Facebook with a link to a book on Amazon that virtually was "How to become a pedophile" Which I wholeheartedly DISAGREE with. I find this sick and disgusting.

One of the best things we can do is pray for Cedar Springs as they have been a shining light in the Knoxville area for the past 34 years! Please consider shopping locally this Christmas as well as encouraging others to do the same! The daughter said that online purchasing is having a huge impact on many local businesses, and she has many friends who owned Christian bookstores who have had to go out of business! Christ is the reason for the season! The local Christian bookstores allow us to keep Christ in Christmas! Please support your local businesses this Christmas season!

They are offering some of their specials for
Cyber Monday! You can also see all of the Cyber Monday deals from Cedar Springs Christian Stores HERE. Be sure to sign-up for the $5 in-store coupon as well as get on their mailing list and email list (check right side bar) to receive their sales paper and additional coupons each month!

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude. ~E.P. Powell

I want to wish all my readers a Happy Thanksgiving!!
I am so thankful for all of you.

I don't know why Thanksgiving is becoming the forgotten holiday. Since when are people unable to wait one day to get to shopping for things they don't need? It pains me stores are open and those working have to be away from family so big businesses can make a buck. I am all about saving money but I will not sacrifice my time with my family and enjoying a holiday together.
Stepping off my soapbox

Please enjoy this great holiday with family and friends, take time to reflect on God's blessings over the year, take a break, eat, relax and make wonderful memories.

Be thankful!

Candied Yams

Candied Yams (This is heaven on a fork)
This is my all time favorite Thanksgiving side dish

Ingredients
2 pounds Sweet Potatoes, quartered or Canned Yams
½ cup Butter
3/4 cup Brown Sugar
2 cups miniature marshmallows, divided
ground cinnamon to taste
ground nutmeg to taste

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Peel potatoes and boil until slightly underdone, about 15 minutes. Drain and cool. If you use canned yams then NO NEED TO DO THIS STEP

3. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, brown sugar, 1 cup marshmallows, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cook, stirring occasionally, until marshmallows are melted.

4. Stir potatoes into marshmallow sauce. While stirring mash about half of the potatoes, and break the others into bite-sized chunks. Transfer to prepared dish.

5. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and cover top evenly with remaining marshmallows. Return to oven and bake until marshmallows are golden brown.

Titanic Museum Tour

My family and I had the opportunity to tour the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge on Friday 11/19, and it was a great experience. They are in full Christmas decor with decorations, lighted tree and snow. The decorations are so beautiful. This was the first time we had been to Titanic Museum and we were so excited to go.

When you enter the boat you are given a card with information about one of the passengers. Then at the end of the museum you learn if they survived or not. My daughter and I's passenger survived but my husband and son's passenger perished.

There is lots to see and interact with at this museum which is great with young kids. You get to feel a real iceberg, dip your hands into water that was the same temperature as the ocean water was when the ship hit the iceberg. (My son proceeded to splash my daughter and drenched her with it) You can hear sound bites from that time. It was very cool to see and experience.

The staff there were wonderful. They were all dressed as if they were on the Titanic down to hairstyles. There is a part of the museum that is fun for children called the Tot-Titanic Play-and-Learn Room. They steer a ship and talk to Polar the bear My kids loved that.

At the end we got to see REAL snow come down and see the Christmas lights on the tree and outside the Titanic. We had a wonderful time.

It will snow every Friday and Saturday at 7pm until January 1st. I recommend trying to go one of those days to see that.

You cannot take your camera inside but you can take pictures outside which is fun since it is decorated there too.

Order your tickets ahead of time and you may get a discount ordering them online directly from the Titanic Museum website.

Your guide to Online Holiday Shopping

A group of Local Knoxville Bloggers including Adventures in Momville, Blue Frog Creations, Coupon Katie, Coupon Mommie, Couponing in Critical Times, Coupons Are Money, Frugally Farming Family, Knoxmoms.com, Knoxville Mamabelle, Sharing Savings with You and myself are doing a series on different Holiday tips throughout December.

Monday I got to share with you my Black Friday tips.

Today’s post is from Knoxville on a Dime.

My favorite tip from her is:
Comparison Shopping
There are so many ways to comparison shop online.
You can Google an item, use Swagbucks and earn points when you search for items,
you can also use one of the price comparison sites out there like BizRate, NexTag or PriceGrabber. These sites search online merchants for the item you are looking for and list where to buy it and how much it is. The best thing to do is have your list with you while doing this and jot down the price and where it is because next you will want to check for coupon codes and free shipping offers.

Black Friday Tips

A group of Local Knoxville Bloggers including
Today I get to share with you my Black Friday tips.

Make a list. Who are you buying for?
Get the paper or go online to get the ads. There are websites that list the ads for the stores. Like Black Friday 2010, Black Friday Ads, Thanksgiving Black Friday Ads, or Black Friday Info. You can go to these websites and get email alerts too. Write down what stores have what and at what price so you are prepared. Keep the ads with you so in case store A is sold out you know what other stores have the same product. Also keeping the ad with you helps if you come across a deal that you did not notice in the ad you can compare the price to the other sales to make sure it’s a good deal.

Use Coupons
You can find store coupons and coupons for a lot of things this year. Go to Awesome Freebies and Deals. You search online for coupons for the items you are looking for. When I am looking for something, I google the item or store and coupon code, so an example would be The Children’s Place coupon code. You would be surprised at the coupons you can find on toys and electronics. Also look into products with rebates too.

Make a plan
Figure out what time stores open and make a game plan and order you plan to go to them in.

Figure out what stores price match
No sense in going to store A for one thing when store B has more things on your list. Wal-mart, Target, Best Buy are some stores that price match.

Have a partner
Divide and conquer. Maybe one of you goes to electronics while the other toys. Or 1 person goes to one store and another the other store with each others lists. I did this last year and saved myself a trip to Toys R Us and Kohl's. My 2 friends got the stuff on my list and I got a couple things my friend needed while I went to Target. Grab your cell phone or walkie talkie too so you can call each other if you have a question or problem. My hubby laughed when I said walkie talkie. Sometimes you can't get the best cell reception with hundreds of others on their phones and you all are in a metal box. So a walkie talkie can come in handy.

Leave the kids at home
Waking kids at the crack of dawn and then trying to shop just don’t mix. Talk about stressed out. Black Friday is insane enough let alone dragging kids along. You really will not get much down with them in tow. Plus you are buying gifts for them so that can be quite tricky.

Wear layers and pack a snack and water
It is cold in line outside waiting for the store to open then once you get inside it is hot and the adrenaline is flowing. You also want to stay hydrated and a snack helps keep the energy level up.

If Black Friday scares you….
Do your shopping online in your jammies that morning or the days leading up to it. Retailers this year have gone crazy with pre-Black Fridays deals. Also retailers hold back deals for the Monday after Thanksgiving otherwise known as Cyber Monday. Websites like Black Friday Info help you find deals in the comfort of your home.
