Freaky Friday Fright Nite at Mayor Bob Leonard Park

Calling all ghosts and goblins! The Town of Farragut will host the 15th annual Freaky Friday Fright Nite on Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mayor Bob Leonard Park at 301 Watt Rd. in Farragut. The event will provide a safe place for children to participate in Halloween activities while benefiting the Knoxville Ronald McDonald House.

Children age 12 and under and in costume are invited to “trick or treat” around the walk trail at the park. Local businesses, community groups and Town volunteers will hand out the treats, provide games with prizes, assist with cookie decorating and serve refreshments.

The Town has partnered with the Knoxville Ronald McDonald House each year of the event since 2000 in order to collect essential items that the House needs to continue day-to-day operations. The Ronald McDonald House provides a “home away from home” for families with critically ill children being served by area hospitals and depends on community donations to operate. Families are provided all services for a nominal fee or for free of charge if they are unable to pay.

While Freaky Friday Fright Nite is a free event, participants are asked to donate one of the following items for the House: cleaning supplies including paper towels, detergents (laundry, Dreft for baby clothes, dishwasher), disinfectant spray and wipes; food items including individually wrapped snacks and breakfast bars; household items including gallon and quart size freezer bags, kitchen size trash bags, lawn and leaf bags, plastic forks and spoons, air freshener spray, and 60 watt CFL light bulbs; postage stamps; phone cards; and gift cards to discount and grocery stores and gas stations. Cash donations will also be accepted. Collection stations will be located at two areas: next to the cookie decorating station and next to the entrance from the Harrison Road parking lot.

Operation Christmas Child Greetings

>> Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Everyone loves to receive gifts. During the Christmas Season, we celebrate the arrival of the most special gift of all—god’s Son, Jesus Christ. That “good news of great joy” (Luke 2:10) is the same message we seek to share with children around the world through our Operation Christmas Child project.

This year, millions of children will experience Christmas joy when they receive gift-filled shoe boxes and hear the Gospel through Christian literature and follow-up discipleship programs.

This project is simple yet deep. While the focus is on the children who receive the shoe boxes, those who fill the boxes are impacted as well. It provides them with an opportunity to be a missionary right where they are, because the gift-filled shoe box is a tangible expression of the love of God.

Is your heart stirred by the idea of touching a child’s life? Are you and your family looking for a project that teaches heart lessons about giving? Do you have a church or group you would like to get involved in this project? Check out www.samaritanspurse.org/occ for more information about the project including how to fill a shoe box, where & when to drop it off, and free promotional resources for churches and groups. To talk to someone on the Knoxville Area team, email joynjourney@bellsouth.net.

Take a moment to discover the Power of a Simple Gift.

BOO! at the Zoo

>> Thursday, October 20, 2011

My family got to go to BOO! at the Zoo this last Saturday. It was our first time to BOO! at the Zoo. It did not disappoint. Everyone had fun. We were greeted by 3 Star Wars characters which excited both my kids. Since my son was a Storm Trooper and my daughter was Asoka. (Yes, I match my kids costumes and I have for the last 4 years and I am not ashamed to admit it.)

The trail moved smoothly and the crowd was minimal. I liked how the trail was was spread out and lead you through a good portion of the zoo. Plus you could go on either side of the treat stations. The pumpkins and all the decorations were awesome. It got us in the Halloween spirit for sure. At the end of the Boo trail we each got a Krispy Kreme dounut which was my husbands fave. At the end the kids got to go to a dance party in Kid's Cove. Which rocked I must say. Some kids can boogie.

BOO! at the Zoo 2011 is presented by U.S. Cellular. It is a safe and not-too-scary Halloween fun. There are only 8 more nights left to experience the fun. October 20-23 and 27-30 from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m.

BOO! at the Zoo, a Halloween tradition for 25 years, is a family event featuring devilishly good music and games at the Monster Mash tent in The Clayton Family Kids Cove, your favorite costumed characters throughout the zoo, and the only "haunted" carousel in East Tennessee, the Scary-Go-Round. (How can you tell it's haunted? It goes backwards, of course.) And best of all, you can trick-or-treat down the BOO! trail for your favorite treats!

Tickets

$6 per person

Children under 2 are free

Parking is $5

You can purchase tickets online HERE. I highly recommend this so you can get in and enjoy BOO! at the Zoo faster!!
