Happy Thanksgiving

>> Thursday, November 24, 2011

Thanksgiving Day is a jewel, to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude. ~E.P. Powell

I want to wish all my readers a Happy Thanksgiving!! I am so thankful for all of you.

I don't know why Thanksgiving is becoming the forgotten holiday. Since when are people unable to wait one day to get to shopping for things they don't need? It pains me stores are open and those working have to be away from family so big businesses can make a buck. I am all about saving money but I will not sacrifice my time with my family and enjoying a holiday together.

Stepping off my soapbox

Please enjoy this great holiday with family and friends, take time to reflect on God's blessings over the year, take a break, eat, relax and make wonderful memories.

Be thankful!

Candied Yams

>> Wednesday, November 23, 2011

Candied Yams (This is heaven on a fork)
This is my all time favorite Thanksgiving side dish

Ingredients
2 pounds Sweet Potatoes, quartered or Canned Yams
½ cup Butter
3/4 cup Brown Sugar
2 cups miniature marshmallows, divided
ground cinnamon to taste
ground nutmeg to taste

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Peel potatoes and boil until slightly underdone, about 15 minutes. Drain and cool. If you use canned yams then NO NEED TO DO THIS STEP

3. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, brown sugar, 1 cup marshmallows, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cook, stirring occasionally, until marshmallows are melted.

4. Stir potatoes into marshmallow sauce. While stirring mash about half of the potatoes, and break the others into bite-sized chunks. Transfer to prepared dish.

5. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and cover top evenly with remaining marshmallows. Return to oven and bake until marshmallows are golden brown.

Usborne Books E-Show

I am hosting anE-show which means you shop and order online. This is not an actual party you have to attend. The show closes on 11/30 so order before then. Items will ship directly to you so it does not matter where you live.

I love Usborne books and so do my kids. These would be great Christmas gifts for children in your life and stocking stuffers.

Go to www.snuggleupwithusborne.com and go to the upper right hand corner where it will say Frugalissa Rocks! (my friend came up with the show name, not me)

For every $10 you spend (before tax/shipping) your name will be put in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate. So in other words, if you spend $50, they'll get 5 entries into the drawing. The drawing will be first thing in the morning on Dec. 1st to reveal winners.

Surface Hair Care Bassu Shine Spray Review

I had the opportunity to try Surface Hair Care Bassu Shine Spray this last week. Surface Hair Care products are made with organic, sulfate & gluten free ingredients and contain 100% vegan protein. They are paraben free as well which I love. The hair care line is sold in professional salons.

I used the product on my wet hair, and it did a great job of detangling my hair, and also seemed to protect it from becoming too dry when I blow dried my hair. It made my thick, coarse hair very manageable, and really seemed to keep my hair from becoming overly dry or damaged looking, even when using a straightening and/or curling iron. It had a very pleasant smell, and wasn’t too heavy feeling going on my hair. I did use it on my dry hair for extra shine after styling. My only caution would be to make sure and use it very sparingly on dry hair. If applied too much, especially if done so in one area, it almost made my hair look greasy instead of shiny. Overall, I really like this product and thought it did exactly what it said it would do for my hair.

Disclaimer: I was provided product in exchange for a review and all thoughts are my own. This review was made possible by Mom Spark Media.

Black Friday Tips

Make a list. Who are you buying for?
Get the paper or go online to get the ads. There are websites that list the ads for the stores. Like Black Friday 2011, Black Friday AdLinks, or Black Friday Info. You can go to these websites and get email alerts too. Write down what stores have what and at what price so you are prepared. Keep the ads with you so in case store A is sold out you know what other stores have the same product. Also keeping the ad with you helps if you come across a deal that you did not notice in the ad you can compare the price to the other sales to make sure it’s a good deal.

Use Coupons
You can find store coupons and coupons for a lot of things this year. Go to Awesome Freebies and Deals. You search online for coupons for the items you are looking for. When I am looking for something, I google the item or store and coupon code, so an example would be The Children’s Place coupon code. You would be surprised at the coupons you can find on toys and electronics. Also look into products with rebates too.

Make a plan
Figure out what time stores open and make a game plan and order you plan to go to them in.

Figure out what stores price match
No sense in going to store A for one thing when store B has more things on your list. Wal-mart, Target, Best Buy are some stores that price match.

Have a partner
Divide and conquer. Maybe one of you goes to electronics while the other toys. Or 1 person goes to one store and another the other store with each others lists. I did this last year and saved myself a trip to Toys R Us and Kohl's. My 2 friends got the stuff on my list and I got a couple things my friend needed while I went to Target. Grab your cell phone or walkie talkie too so you can call each other if you have a question or problem. My hubby laughed when I said walkie talkie. Sometimes you can't get the best cell reception with hundreds of others on their phones and you all are in a metal box. So a walkie talkie can come in handy.

Leave the kids at home
Waking kids at the crack of dawn and then trying to shop just don’t mix. Talk about stressed out. Black Friday is insane enough let alone dragging kids along. You really will not get much down with them in tow. Plus you are buying gifts for them so that can be quite tricky.

Wear layers and pack a snack and water
It is cold in line outside waiting for the store to open then once you get inside it is hot and the adrenaline is flowing. You also want to stay hydrated and a snack helps keep the energy level up.

If Black Friday scares you….
Do your shopping online in your jammies that morning or the days leading up to it. Retailers this year have gone crazy with pre-Black Fridays deals. Also retailers hold back deals for the Monday after Thanksgiving otherwise known as Cyber Monday. Websites like Black Friday Info help you find deals in the comfort of your home.

Usborne Books 48 Hour Giveaway

I had the opportunity to review 2 products of Usborne Books. I've always loved their books. My kids have received them as gifts since they were little and now at 4 and 6 years old they still love them. My kids love reading books and I love the chance to sit and read with them. Usborne Books have built great foundation for my kids to love to read and want to read.

The first product I reviewed was 100 Paper Planes to Fly which is 100 tear-out sheets to make all sorts of exciting aircraft-from fighter plans to space rockets to creepy flying bugs. My son loved this book. What boy would not love folding and throwing paper airplanes through the house and even try to take them outside to fly.

The second product was A Big Box of Greeting Cards (that is what it's called). It is 30 handmade all occasion, individually designed and embellished greeting cards and coordinating envelopes in a keepsake box. My daughter loves to make cards so she was very excited to look through and pick out a card for a friend who was having a birthday party.

Usborne Books would like to give one lucky Frugalissa Finds reader these 2 products to have as well.

Shutterfly Holiday Cards

>> Tuesday, November 15, 2011

I love Christmas photo cards. I love pictures of our family together and literally get giddy with excitement months and months before Christmas about making and designing our Christmas photo card. I also love getting Christmas photo cards every year in the mail from family and friends. I keep the ones we receive as it is fun to see how how families have grown.

I have looked at Shutterfly in the past and have been very impressed as they have a great selection of Christmas card designs and Invitations for a reasonable price. I have always wanted a somewhat unique card that is custom to my family and our style. Well, this year I am just amazed out all the different cards they offer. There are so many I like that I don't know what I will choose.

This is a folded card which personalizes your card if you like to write a little something on each card.

I love collage cards a lot since they can show the different faces of your family.

I really like how this would incorporate my Christmas letter or our families Top 10 into it.

Thanksgiving – Your Plan Ahead Guide

I wanted to share a few reminders on how to reduce the overall cost of your Thanksgiving meal.

1. Plan. Rework the plan. Finalize the plan.

Make a plan. Dig through those recipe cards, browse the magazines. Make your plan. But only pencil it in!

Then rework your plan as time gets closer and you see things on sale, or another recipe you’d like to experiment with.

On Sunday before Thanksgiving, finalize the plan and get to work! By then, you’ll have seen all the products that are on sale, what the lowest prices are and you’ll be able to carve the plan into stone.

2. Prices.

From my experience in years past, the LOWEST prices on all the Thanksgiving favorites…like green beans, sweet potatoes, pecans and walnuts, cranberry sauces, etc…are found during Thanksgiving week. Even this week there are some great deals.

It’s a tricky game to play, but if you have a plan and you see something on your list for 60-75% less than regular retail price the week before Thanksgiving, go ahead and get it. Or wait and hope it’s still on sale for Thanksgiving week. But if you wait, it might not be on sale the next week. Trust your instincts.

3. Coupons. Coupons. Coupons.

There are so many coupons released both online and in the newspapers this week and next week so clip, use and match them with products on sale. Many of which are for the most popular products used during the Thanksgiving meal.

4. Turkey Prices.

Watch those circulars.

Shop around. Pay close attention to all the store’s prices in your area.

How big of a turkey should I get? Rule of thumb: 1 lb. per person attending your feast. Depending on how much meat you need/want for leftovers!

And don’t forget…this is a great time to get an extra turkey, perhaps a smaller turkey breast, that you can cook up in the slow cooker and use the meat for multiple meals. Prices won’t be this low until Thanksgiving 2012!

Enjoy your feast! And revel in the fact that you spent as little as you could on your Turkey Day Feast!!!

What other tips do you have to share for saving $$$ on the Thanksgiving meal???

Make Christmas Different This Year

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- Merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year let's make a difference. This year let's give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper? Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plonking down the Benjamines on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we
care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

Send this post to everyone on your mailing list -- post to Facebook or Twitter. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about?

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- Merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

Lisa Ross Birth Center Holds 20th Anniversary Celebration

Saturday the Lisa Ross Birth and Women’s Center will host a 20th Anniversary Celebration. It will be a celebration of 20 years of caring for moms and babies in our community, with new moms coming and old one reuniting.

It will take place November 19, 1:00pm - 4:00pm at New Harvest Park in East Knoxville, at 4775 New Harvest Lane. There will be live acoustic music, children’s activities, a puppet show by the Rainbow Theater, a silent auction and a special program celebrating the birth center’s 20-year history. A few of the auction items include a 2-hour house concert by Karen Reynolds, free sessions with local acupuncturists and chiropractors, cloth diapers and accessories, day passes to Dollywood and Ripley’s Aquarium, a six month cupcake membership to Mag Pies Bakery, gift cards to local restaurants and more. After 20 years in Knoxville, Lisa Ross Birth and Women’s Center remains Knoxville’s only true freestanding birth center that is accredited with the American Association of Birth Centers. The program will be a celebration of the specialized care that clients and families have received at the center for the past two decades - from pregnancy, birth and offering support to new parents - and the natural community that formed within it.

To read the wonderful anniversary story in the News Sentinel about LRBWC, written by Kristi Nelson, click here.

To read more about it from the perspective of a Lisa Ross client and board member, Rebecca from Simply Natural Mom is talking about it too, in this post at Family Friendly Knoxville.

Knoxville Zoo: Free Admission 11/12-13

>> Wednesday, November 9, 2011

Visitors to Knoxville Zoo will enjoy free admission and parking during Kroger Free Weekend on Saturday, Nov. 12, and Sunday, Nov. 13, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. (Last admissions are one hour before closing at 3:30 p.m.)

Knoxville Zoo hosts Kroger Free Weekend to give everyone the opportunity to visit the zoo, say thanks for all the community support the zoo receives throughout the year and help other local charities who make East Tennessee a great place to live. Visitors are encouraged to stop by Kroger and pick up a donation for one of the charitable organizations who will be on-site at the zoo during Kroger Free Weekend. Mission of Hope, Young-Williams Animal Center, the Blount County Humane Society and KnoxPAWS are the organizations benefiting from the generosity of Kroger Free Weekend visitors, although a donation is not required for admission to the zoo.

Mission of Hope is a volunteer organization providing assistance, aid and resources to those living in poverty-stricken areas in rural Appalachia. In order to help meet the increased demand of the holiday season, they are requesting donations of non-perishable food items, new children's toys and hygiene items such as tooth brushes, toothpaste, dental floss, bar soap, deodorant and shampoo.

The Young-Williams Animal Center serves the community by providing compassionate care to animals, working to find homes for adoptable pets, providing affordable spaying and neutering services and educational programs about animal welfare. The center is in need of dry and canned dog, cat, puppy and kitten food.

KnoxPAWS is a program of the Knoxville Knox County Office on Aging that places adoptable senior pets with senior citizens. They are in need of wet and dry dog and cat food and flea and tick preventative. Other organizations who will be on-site to provide information about their services are Goodwill Industries, Imagination Library and Habitat for Humanity.
