This is a Keeper……

Got this as an email and it had such a sweet take away.

I grew up in the 50's/60's with practical parents.
A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen, before they had a name for it.
A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones.

Their marriage was good, their dreams focused.
Their best friends lived barely a wave away.

I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat
and Mom in a house dress, vacuum cleaner in one hand,
and dish-towel in the other. It was the time for fixing things...
a curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door,
the hem in a dress. Things we keep.

It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy.
All that re-fixing, eating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more.

But then my mother died, and on that clear summer's night,
in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the
pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more..

Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away...never to return.
So.... while we have it... it's best we love it..... and care for it...
fix it when it's broken.... and heal it when it's sick.

This is true for marriage.... and old cars....
and children with bad report cards....... and dogs with bad hips...
and aging parents..... and grandparents.
We keep them because they're worth it, because we are worth it.
Some things we keep. Like a classmate that moved away
or a best friend we grew up with..

There are just some things that make life important,
like people we know are special......and so, we keep them close!

I received this from someone who thinks I am a 'keeper',
so I've sent it to the people I think of in the same way.
Now it's your turn to send this to those people that are
"keepers" in your life.
Good friends are like stars.... You don't always see them,
but you know they are always there. Keep them close!

TEN THINGS GOD WON'T ASK ON THAT DAY..

1... God won't ask what kind of car you drove. He'll ask how many people you drove who didn't havetransportation.

2... God won't ask the square footage of your house. He'll ask how many people you welcomed into your home.

3... God won't ask about the clothes you had in your closet. He'll ask how many you helped to clothe.

4... God won't ask what your highest salary was. He'll ask if you compromised your character to obtain it.

5... God won't ask what your job title was. He'll ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability.

6... God won't ask how many friends you had. He'll ask how many people to whom you were a friend.

7... God won't ask in what neighborhood you lived. He'll ask how you treated your neighbors.

8... God won't ask about the color of your skin. He'll ask about the content of your character.

9... God won't ask why it took you so long to seek Salvation. He'll lovingly take you to your mansion in heaven, and not to the gates of Hell.

10... God won't have to ask how many people you forwarded this to. He already knows your decision.

After Christmas Clearance

After Christmas clearance is I think my favorite time to shop all year. I get gifts for the following year, decorations for my home and ornaments for my tree, paper products, and Christmas clothing for the kids all after Christmas to use for the following year. I bought a very special doll when my daughter was 2 years old at a after Christmas clearance and now at almost 5 years old she is old enough to really appreciate it and play with it. It was a very expensive doll I got it for $4. You can't beat that. I have saved it these last 2 Christmases because I knew this Christmas she would love it. I have a friend who buys all her paper towels for the whole year on after Christmas clearance. She gets Brawny or Viva (the name brand good quality paper towels) for normally around .30-.50 cents a roll. She does not mind they have a winter motif to them to her they are paper towels. Stock up on plastic Glad-ware/Ziploc storage containers (paired witha coupon can you say cheap), Saran Wraps, Ziploc bags all of it super cheap. Last Christmas I got a 2pk of Clorox Wipes for $1 who cares they were in a holiday canister. They were under my sink no one saw them but me.

If you are planning to have a New Year's Eve or New Years Day Party. Stock up on nuts, candy, cookies, etc. since it is all on clearance. Spice racks normally are clearanced out too. I always check out those boxed food gifts to see if there is anything I can disassemble to make up a gift for the New Year for someone. Like those hot chocolate, tea or coffee sets. You can always reuse a mug and add more to the gift. Make sure to check expiration dates most likely you won't get to next Christmas but you may. Also those individual bagged snacks can come in handy if you plan to take a vacation or car ride. I hate unnecessary trash ( I try to be as GREEN as possible) but I have been known to buy individual wrapped items when we go on a long car ride. They also are good goody bag items for birthdays.

My hubby and I will celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary in two weeks and every year I add more decor to our home and ornaments to our tree shopping after Christmas clearance. It is also a great time to buy an artificial tree. Since they can be 70-90% off.

In addition my parents and I buy each one of the kids an ornament so they can have their own collection when they start their home. My parents and Godparents did that for me while I was growing up and it is a great tradition I do with my kids. Some may think that is cheesy to buy it afterward but my kids really don't care and and I pay 50%-75% of what retail is so I think it is worth it anyway.

In January we celebrate our wedding anniversary, Hubby and our son's birthdays. Can you say parties and business for me? I try to coordinate the colors to the party to be either green or red (not together of course) so I can buy all the paper products, napkins, plastic ware during this time. I stick with solid red or solid green. I have been doing this for nearly 7 years now and one of my son's favorite colors is red so he does not mind one bit that his party plates are normally red. It is also good to stock up on solid red for Valentine parties and green for any St. Patrick's Day activities you may do. These paper products come in handy for class parties if your child is in school too. Being that I have 2 birthdays to buy for I get toys on clearance and save them for my son's birthday, gifts when we are invited to birthday parties or save them for future birthdays for my kids. I am a stockpiler I buy pretty much all year as deals come up and save them for when I need them, like that doll I bought 3 years ago. I also stock up on the stocking stuffers either for little gifts for my kids or to put stuff in goody bags for birthday parties. I have used those little tubs of Play Do for some of the goody bags at my kids parties. I have picked up travel size Magna Doodles for the kids to have in the car too. I am mindful of anything that looks to Christmasy though so if I can disassemble it and repackage it then I will.

This is a great time to stock up on end of season items and clothing since January is when all things winter get clearanced out to make room for Spring which you already see in stores already, Crazy! I really want to know who buys a bathing suit in December anyway, HA!!!

What is your favorite item to get after Christmas?

’Twas the Night Before Christmas... Bethlehem Style

>> Saturday, December 24, 2011

’Twas the Night Before Christmas... Bethlehem Style

’Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the land
all the creatures were stirring for the Glory at hand.
The stars were all hung in the crisp evening sky,
but one shone much brighter and hung twice as high.

The shepherds were watching their flocks o'er the hills,
while Angels appeared to tell them God's will.
And Mary on her donkey and Joseph with his staff,
had just arrived from a far away land.

When a rap on the door, arose such a clatter,
the innkeeper answered to see what was the matter,
“Away to the stable” was all he could say,
for the rooms were all full, there was no place to stay.

The star shining through the rafters with a glow
gave the lustre of riches to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should behold,
but a miniature manger that belonged to a foal.

With a little whimper, and a cry so mild,
I knew in a moment it must be the Christ Child.
More rapid than eagles, His Angels they came,
and sang Glory to God as they called Him by name:

"Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Our Savior and King!
Emmanuel, Eternal Father, new born Prince of Peace!"
"Holy, Holy, Holy" their voices they rang,
more beautiful than harps or bells as they sang.

The hay glowed like Gold as we all stared in awe,
at the sight we beheld that night until dawn
Even the animals, they lay there so still,
With a sense of reverence, to abide in Gods will.

And then, in a twinkling, I saw down the road
three shadows approaching with camels in tow.
As I drew in my head and was turning around,
from the Orient, the East, Three Kings came to town.

They were dressed in fine robes, from their heads to their toes
and had crowns of bright jewels that sparkled and glowed.
And each bearing a gift, of the finest of things,
Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh, the first offering to their King.

His eyes-- how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, His nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
and His soft precious skin was as pure as the snow.

The star twinkled above with a wonderful light,
as the glory of God, it pierced through the night.
He had tiny hands and a little round face,
that shone when he smiled, with humility and grace.

He was perfect and precious, possessing Eternal Wealth,
and I bowed when I saw Him, in spite of myself.
The Peace that I felt and the Joy in my heart,
soon gave me a Hope that my new life would start.

I spoke not a word, but went straight to my home,
to tell of His story to all that I'd known.
And the love that surrounded me, I just had to share,
The Prophecy Fulfilled, the Messiah was here!

And as morning gave way and the Angels ascended,
They sang of this Christmas and the Gift that was given.
Then I heard the Lord proclaim throughout the whole Earth
“Eternal Life I give, through my only Sons birth”

The Gifts of Christmas

Still looking for the perfect gift for that special person on your list.

Consider Baking or cooking as a Gift
Who does not like to eat?? Come on. But to a family who is going through a stressful time or an elderly couple, making a meal or taking over some baked goodies is a great gift. If you love to bake or cook use that as a gift.

Consider doing a family gift
Like getting a family zoo membership or a membership to the aquarium or amusement park. Why not pull all the money together and buy one gift that everyone can enjoy throughout 2010. You can enjoy family time as well as make memories.

Consider a Class or Hobby Gift
Does someone like to rock climb or maybe you have a future gymnast in the family. Give the gift of a class to learn a new hobby or skill. I did this last year for my daughter. I signed my daughter up for a dance/gymnastics class. She gets a lot of the hand me down toys from my older child and my kids are so blessed with stuff from others and being the only grand kids that my hubby and I were thinking of something she would enjoy and something that does not clutter up the living room.

Consider a Gift Card
You can't go wrong with a gift card. There are some great incentives for buying gift cards during the holiday season. Restaurants give incentives when you buy a certain amount of gift cards you get $5-10 back. My family buys gift cards during this time to use throughout the year and pair it with the incentives and you get more money to use. If you know you will be spending money at a certain store or restaurant it is good to buy ahead if you are able.

Teacher Gift #2-Peppermint Hot Chocolate Stirrers

>> Monday, December 19, 2011

The next homemade gift I made were Peppermint Hot Chocolate Stirrers. This is really a very inexpensive gift but it is still homemade and very thoughtful for a any hot chocolate lover. I love peppermint so this was a winner in my book.

First you get plastic coffee stir sticks and put the marshmallow on one end this is the stirrer. I found the stir sticks I used on the paper aisle at Walmart. They were next to regular straws and napkins and such. I think I paid $2-3 for a box of 250!

I melted about half a bag of semi sweet chocolate chips in the microwave. I microwaved them for 2 minutes (stirring every 30 seconds) to get it smooth and melted.

Then crush up peppermints or candy canes (I used my magic bullet) or if you want to use sprinkles do that too.

Roll the dipped choclolate marshmallow in the sprinkles or crushed peppermint then let it dry on a waxed paper. After you are all done put them in the fridge to harden for about 10 minutes ( I actually left mine in for an hour)

I then got mugs for a less then a dollar at Wal-Mart and I got a box of hot chocolate for .88 cents and packaged it up. I put some extra mini candy canes at the bottom of the mug to give the mug some filling.

Teacher Gift #1-Tea Wreath

My first teacher gift I made was a Tea Wreath. I made this at my first Homemade Gift Party and it was really my FIRST official homemade gift I've really ever made. I am pretty darn proud of myself for completing it. ;)

It can be hung on a hook or like below I attached magnets so it can go on the fridge or somewhere with a metal backing.

After the person uses up the tea they can use the wreath to attach notes or even pictures. I really think this is a very cool gift with lots of options.
